Tequila Tasting and History Tour

Over the past 10 years Marcos Agave and his late wife Jennifer traveled town to town meeting the firefighters and visiting small boutique distilleries. They donated fire fighting equipment and stopped at every distillery possible to try specialty tequilas in unique boutique haciendas. Through time they became known as philanthropists and connoisseurs of this historical agave spirit.  Over the past six years, Marcos Agave met unique people in hotels and tequila tasting rooms to form a dynamic team of tour guides.  Our guides listen to podcasts like The Agave Social Club with Doug Price and follow every possible source of information to keep up-to-date on tequila.

“You will listen to the coa cut the agave fronds, smell the miel de agave, and walk the dark rooms of oak barrels with sacred tequila. We make sure you are engulfed into the land of agave.”

Your day will start promptly at 8 AM to make the journey through early Guadalajara traffic into El Arenal.  The first hour drive gives you a full overview of the history of tequila.  We treat you to a nice breakfast of artisanal carnitas tacos and unique cultural salsas next to our first distillery Don Valente. This is a full day and our next stop will be the Pueblo Magico town of Tequila where you can walk the streets and historical buildings in Tequila Centro.  In the afternoon, we will tour a larger distillery or boutique distillery of your choice.  This is where you have the opportunity to prearrange and customize your tequila journey.  Our goal is to leave the Tequila region by 4 PM as it can take two hours to return back to Guadalajara and Tlaquepaque.

Marcos Agave and his expert tequila guides maintain close relations with the special distilleries for private tours.
This is a special privilege as we are up front and close in the field and distillery for a full experience.  You will enjoy the world of tequila and learn about additive free selections.

We pay the tour fee and you pay for the special tequila tasting.  You will be in the most intimate tasting environment possible with experts every minute. Our tour guides are available by phone to answer questions.

DISTILLERY CASCAHUIN – NOM 1123

Immediately upon entering this distillery in El Arenal, you will see piles of agaves being carefully placed into the hornos. The artesenal Tahona process is a specialty to see along with a close examination of the fermentation process.   You will taste the 74% single distilled “ordinario” along with still strength 48% blanco tequila.  The quiote of agave is shared along with the sacred rooms of barrels where Reposado and Anejo sit in solitude.  Your private tasting experience is performed by us and factory tequila experts in a beautiful patio environment where countless bottles are displayed. Come enjoy many additive free tequilas.

Additional fees:

480MXN Taste Blanco, Reposado, Anejo

700MXN  same as above plus Extra Anejo, Tahona Blanco, 48% Blanco

DISTILLERY ATANASIO – NOM 1599

When you enter the agave lands of this distillery, it sets the stage of owner Rene and his love of the El Jimadors.  “The el jimadors are the most important element of the tequila making process,” said Rene in a recent interview.   You will eat a traditional meal in the field and tour this special family hacienda while tasting additive free tequila in their authentic patio area.   Special bottles are available for purchase along with merch.

Additional fees:

650MXN to 1800MXN per person

See the attached brochure to choose your level of experience.

DISTILLERY FORTALEZA – NOM 1493

You know what this is— a high demand tour which requires lead time and punctual arrival.  Guierrmo Sauza designed a special tour taking you back in time to show the Tahona crushing method and traditional distillation process of additive free tequila.  There are both short and long tours depending on your fitness as the long tour requires hiking over a mountain on difficult agave terrain. All of the tours end in the underground cave where the best tequilas are sampled and history is shared.

Additional Fees:

500MXN Short Tour

700MXN Long Tour

DISTILLERY CAVA DE ORO – NOM 1477

We will tour you through a beautiful hacienda showing traditional tequila making methods.  Fresh cut agave goes into the hornos for roasting and large Tahona wheels crush the cooked fiber making “miel de agave.” You will see the musto juice ferment in wooden tanks with natural micro organisms and wood fires heating authentic copper stills.  The tasting room is lined with hundreds of oak barrels while you enjoy the rich tequila on your palette.   Six special tequilas are enjoyed along with a real Tahona blanco. Indulge with us… we love this place.
